How to Glorify God in Any Job—from Mom to CEO! Discover biblical ways to work with joy, serve others, and reflect Christ in your daily work.

Did you know that, for the Christian, work is actually a good thing? Yes, at the fall of creation, work became toilsome and filled with hardship, but work in-and-of itself wasn't the punishment. And of course, we also know that work is an essential part of life, regardless of how we feel about it from day to day. Whether we are a stay at home mom ( 🙋hi there, it's me!) or the CEO of a company, Christians are called to glorify God in all that we do. Whether we work in an office, at home, in ministry, or in any other field, our workplace is a mission field in which we can glorify God daily. So that's the question, really. How do we glorify God in any job from mom to CEO?

While there are many ways that we can glorify God at work, here are a few biblical ways that the Bible calls us to live out in our jobs (and in every part of life, actually).

1. Treat Others with Kindness and Respect

The people we interact with on a daily basis matter. Every single person is made in the image of God. So when we think about glorifying God in our job, one impactful way that we can do this is by treating everyone with kindness and respect. Whether your job consists of prickly co-workers, tantrum-y toddlers, like-minded believers, or online clients who you only interact with occasionally.

Treating others well reflects the love of Christ and sets us apart as believers. When people see that we treat them with a kindness that most of the world doesn't know how to give, it can make an impact.

2. Work Differently

Jesus said, “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden” (Matthew 5:14). When we choose to be respectful of others, avoid gossip, remain honest, and work hard even when no one is going to praise us, it serves as a powerful testimony. Co-workers will see the difference. It may even open up evangelism opportunities. Likewise, those who stay home with their kids are able to model this to their children and show them early on that this is how we live. We work differently because we are different - called out and set apart by God.

3. Work with Joy and Gratitude

Many people view work as a burden, but as Christians, we are called to work with joy, knowing that our efforts are ultimately for God. Colossians 3:23 reminds us, “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men”. We are to shift our minds and hearts to one of gratitude for the job we have, the life we've been given, and a "I get to" mentality instead of a "have to" mentality.  Instead of focusing on workplace frustrations, we can choose to think of our jobs with gratitude, knowing that it is an opportunity to serve God and support ourselves and our families.

4. Serve Others with a Humble Heart

When Jesus washed His disciples’ feet he showed us the important of serving instead of living to be served (John 13:12-17). As a mom, I know how easy it is to think "I don't want to do that right now. I just want to sit here" even when I know that a task needs doing. I know how easy it is to get caught up in my own comfort and my own "rights", instead of humbly admitting that sometimes the things we avoid doing are the best ways we can serve in that moment. The same is true in the job world.

We don't always feel like serving, being humble, or choosing to put others first in the work place, but that's exactly what we need to do to glorify God in any job. Taking on a servant-hearted attitude, looking for ways to help coworkers, encouraging our children, and going the extra mile for clients are all ways that we can be serve others, depending on the situation. We can show by our posture and countenance that we don't think of ourselves as better or more important than the people around us, and we can be humble enough to submit to those in leadership when we need to.

Glorifying God at work is about everyday faithfulness. It's in the daily determination (with help from the Holy Spirit) to treat others with kindness, to work differently, to work with joy, and to serve with humility, that we can glorify God in any job, whether you're a mom, a CEO, or a blue collar worker. Every task, no matter how small, can be done for the glory of God (1 Corinthians 10:31). As we embrace this perspective, we not only grow in our faith but also become powerful ambassadors for Christ in our daily work.
