The Bible and the Distraction

Thursday, January 17, 2013
As I mentioned a few days ago, I have gotten behind on my "Read through the Bible in a Year" plan, so today I sat down and did a little extra to start catching up. Today I read Genesis 17-22. Not a huge chunk, but more than I would usually do in one sitting since I am such a slow reader. The final chapter I read was about God asking Abraham to sacrifice Isaac, but at the last second, after seeing that Abraham was truly going to obey Him, God provided a sacrifice that did not require Abraham's son to be killed.
The place on which Abraham had taken Isaac to be sacrificed was then referred to as "The Lord will Provide" (Genesis 22:14). I found this to be awesome, because God was never really going to take Isaac away, as long as Abraham surrendered his son over to the Maker, the one who blessed Abraham and Sarah with their son to begin with.
Now, God will sometimes take things away from us, and He could have done so, if He had pleased. However, in many cases, like this one, God wants our hearts to be right more than He wants the actual sacrifice. He wants us to bow down before Him and say, "Do as You please, Lord". Sometimes, He will remove things from our lives, but always, He just wants us to let Him have control. He doesn't want to take away everything we love/enjoy, but He does want us to give Him control over all of it.
I always try to ask God to reveal to me what I need to give up, and reveal to me how to give Him control of everything. I'm not very good at this yet, but I know it is right, and I know I must always work at it.

And a lighter note......... THIS is what happens when I do try to read my Bible.....

OBVIOUSLY, playing rope is more important than the word of God. lol
